Tama drums started life in 1974, but was originally called Hoshino Gakki since 1965 under the brand Star Drums, Star drums sold well in America due to being low cost, so the Tama brand was formed after the owner decided to produce high quality drums and hardware naming the brand after his wife Tama. Star continues to be used today in the model names of Tama drums.
